Talk 1: Traffic patterns from real-time video apps

Realtime video conference apps have significantly different traffic patterns from streamed video. This talk will describe those patterns (UDP, significant uplink usage, latency sensitivity, edge-to-edge) and explain why these engineering choices were made. I’ll discuss the bandwidth estimation and management strategies used in these apps. I’ll also give some pointers as to how to spot this traffic for filtering or prioritisation purposes.

Presenter: Tim Panton (Pipe)

Talk 2: An Evolution Of The Network Engineer

This talk explores what happens when a business grows, and the role of the network becomes critical: you have more servers to connect, more data to transport, more services reliant on each other. You can’t afford to provide a bad experience to your customers, nor “throw more people at the problem” to solve it. You have to move fast and be reliable in today’s world — even when sharks eat your fibre cables.

Your knowledge and skills will be the tools to approach the growth, but you will deal with never-seen-before challenges — including esoteric ones. You will also begin to realise that 1% means thousands, millions or hundreds of millions of people, and indeed, you won’t have time for manual fixes.

We identified common knowledge and skill gaps that Network Engineers have when faced with the challenge of operating a large-scale network. We will explain why they are important and give an approach to bridging them to prepare yourself for a future ahead.

Presenter: Elena Sanchez & Jose Leitao (Facebook)

Presenter: Rick Donato

Talk 2: Ask Me Why I Don’t Like DDoSers

This will be a talk about network security, risk management, cybercrime incident response… and one of Marek’s toughest days in the office for a while. A lot has been said about this talk, and given the rise in ransom-based attacks, it is critical that more discussion is had around how to deal with these situations, when they do inevitably arise.

Talk 1: RF Spectrum for Mobile Networks

Hot off of the press from the recent radio frequency auctions, Andy’s here to give us an update on how the dust has settled on the mobile network frequency allocations in the UK, how that will affect the 4G and 5G networks. There may even be a little speculation on what else may happen in the near future (if we’re very well behaved).

Presenter: Andy Sutton (BT)

Talk 2: Viking Monitoring: A very punny adventure!

Supercomputers! Yes, no, really. York University still maintains a supercomputer, by the name of Viking (of course). But how does one look after such a beast? More precisely, how do you keep track of 175 compute nodes all working together? Nat’s unique insights into how the University monitor their clustered supercomputer is sure to be an enjoyable & informative run through looking after one of the more illusive style of networked systems.

Presenter: Nat Lasseter (York University)

Talk 3: Your Forwarding Plane as Code: How, What, and Why

Aaron will spend ~20 minutes arguing that if you love YAML (who doesn’t?! -ed) then you should love P4. If you’re all about infrastructure as code, then hooooo boy let’s talk forwarding plane!

PRESENTER: Aaron A. Glenn (predicted paths)

Talk 1: RFC8981 – Temporary Address Extensions for Stateless Address Autoconfiguration in IPv6

This newly published RFC describes an extension to IPv6 Stateless Address Autoconfiguration, which causes hosts to generate temporary addresses with randomised interface identifiers. Changing addresses over time limits the window of time during which eavesdroppers may perform address-based network-activity correlation. Additionally, it reduces the window of exposure for a host being accessible via the same address over a period of time.

Presenter: Fernando Gont (SI6 Networks)

Talk 2: L2TP 101: On-Ramp to Consuming Wholesale Broadband Services

Marek will talk about Faelix’s experiences setting up and operating wholesale broadband interconnects (with ICUK and Zen), discussing the technical implementation details of the interconnects, and some of the RADIUS and L2TP tricks they’ve had to implement along the way.

Presenter: Marek Isalski (Faelix)

Lots of networks are in the process of implementing a network automation stack to manage their configurations. Peering Manager can help such networks keep track of BGP sessions such as transit, IXP or private peering ones.

Presenter: Guillaume Mazoyer

Talk 2: Operating Fixed Line Last Mile Networks

No fixed line network operator in the UK has to deal with the problems that Openreach does. This is a tongue in cheek look at how I learned to appreciate Openreach, and how tough it can be to build and operate a fix line access network.

Andy will be speaking to us this time about O-RAN. As an area of mobile radio technology that has the potential to transform the landscape of mobile networks across the world, we’re extremely excited to hear from Andy, particularly given his wealth of hands-on industry experience in this area.

Presenter: Andy Sutton

Talk 2: It is time to replace MD5 with TCP-AO

As many of us will have come to understand over the years, MD5 passwords on eBGP sessions have something of a spotty implementation record. Ron will be introducing the TCP Authentication Option as its replacement, and the state of implementation &  interoperability between two well-known router vendors.

For anyone concerned about routing security, this is sure to be an extremely pertinent presentation.

Presenter: RON BONICA (Juniper)

Talk 1: Playing with (world wide) routing for fun (and profit)

Are you learning for professional networking certificate? Or just playing with your lab? Do you miss having options to use full, real table along with all prefix attributes? Or maybe you have multiple internet links and would like to optimally distribute traffic and don’t know how to do this? During the session I’ll demonstrate the BGP free-for-all project, as well as some practical tips how to achieve better load balancing or routing if you have multiple internet links.

Presenter: Łukasz BromirskI (Cisco)

Talk 2: pygnmi : Developing Python module for gNMI

There has been no good Python library to manage the network elements using the gNMI. To overcome this limitation, we’ve decided to create our own. Being non-professional software developers, it is also an interesting learning curve.

As such, the talk will share the status of the pygnmi library development, examples of usage and integration with existing automation frameworks and story of the development

Presenter: Anton Karneliuk (@ANTONKARNELIUK)

Talk 1: Why Documentation Matters

As Cloudflare announced 1.1.1.0/24 for its recursive resolver, it means that we also get all the traffic for 1.1.1.1. Not just DNS. In comes documentation. Quite a few vendors (and conference presenters) have been guilty of not using RFC5737.

Presenter: Tom Strickx (Cloudflare)

Talk 2: Network telemetry for DDoS detection purposes

Pavel Odintsov from FastNetMon will talk about challenges with using network telemetry for DDoS detection.

The talk will cover sFlow, Netflow and IPFIX from different vendors, review traffic capture methods available on Linux and briefly discuss VPC flow logs from public clouds.
